Providing Opportunities to Be Heard. Local “rising 9th graders” in the Supporting Our Leaders (SOL) Program this summer worked with journalist, Federico Martinez, to develop, write, edit and publish stories of importance to them on an online website as part of the Believe 2 Become initiative of the Douglas and Maria DeVos Foundation to stop summer learning loss. The Hispanic Center of Western Michigan is currently restructuring its Immigrant Rights Program to more closely serve the needs of our clients in the city and the region. We believe that expansion of our current work in this area of services has the potential to dramatically improve the self-sufficiency of our clients and their quality of life in our community while furthering our mission to “maximize the potential of Hispanics in our community.”
We expect this enhanced set of services to be operational by the Winter of 2008.
Coming Soon
• Direct Client Assistance with Immigration Forms and Petitions
• Citizenship & Civics Classes
• Legislative Watch – Electronic Newsletter
• Standardized Training Curriculum on Immigration Issues (for Churches, Organizations, and Businesses)
Enhanced Immigration Case Management Services
A key element of our future programming will involve enhanced Immigration Case Management Services with staff capacity to assist clients in filling out and submitting applications for:
• Permanent Residency
• Citizenship
• Affidavits of Support
• VAWA petitions (for domestic violence victims)
• Special J-Visas (for abused, neglected, or abandoned youth)
• Temporary Protective Status (TPS), etc.
We expect to implement Sliding Scale Fees for this area of service within our agency with the option to waive client fees for extremely indigent clients. Victims of crime seeking assistance for humanitarian relief through VAWA petitions, Special J-Visas, or similar relief venues would not be subject to Sliding Scale Fees.
For more information regarding forthcoming services, potential job openings in our Immigrant Rights Program, volunteer opportunities, or financial contributions to our ongoing efforts please contact CEO Martha Gonzalez-Cortes at (616) 742-0221 mcortes@hispanic-center.org.
