The Hispanic Voice
Providing Opportunities to Be Heard. Local “rising 9th graders” in the Supporting Our Leaders (SOL) Program this summer worked with journalist, Federico Martinez, to develop, write, edit and publish stories of importance to them on an online website as part of the Believe 2 Become initiative of the Douglas and Maria DeVos Foundation to stop summer learning loss. The Hispanic Center of Western Michigan has highly trained and experienced Case Management Staff that provide comprehensive services for impoverished adults and families in crisis.
A Typical Client
The typical client will normally come to see us in the hopes of resolving multiple and equally urgent concerns, such as: a pending foreclosure or housing eviction, job loss, lack of health coverage for a chronic illness, and concern for a teenager with a potential substance abuse problem and gang affiliation.
Our Program Priority & Overview
Our priority in this Family Support Services area is to help impoverished people in crisis successfully navigate the systems of service that exist in our community.
Our most commonly requested services in this program area include:
Housing assistance
Food Pantry referrals
Domestic Violence victim support services
Assistance with victims of crime and interactions with law enforcement
Assistance navigating Divorce, Child Custody, and Child Support issues
Child Protective Services concerns
Mental Health services and referrals
Wage and Hour labor concerns
Civil Rights problems
Public Benefit concerns
Parenting concerns (Teenage runaways, youth substance abuse problems, gang affiliation concerns, law enforcement problems and juvenile crime issues, etc.)
Chronic and catastrophic health problems impacting uninsured households
A Commitment to Mental Health Services & Outreach
Our Mental Health educational outreach and direct support services have been an important enhancement to the Centers Family Support Services area in recent years. Our outreach staff has helped us connect Spanish speaking clients with the agencies and mental health care providers that help us address all levels of care required by this population.
The Center provides:
Direct services to help clients address problems within the family unit
Scheduling assistance for clients in need of appointments to Spanish speaking therapists and mental health providers
Coordination of a weekly womens mental health therapy group (with a free meal and child care provided)
